Resort Recreation (Oct. Issue)

Staying in shape is an ongoing process. Groceries have to be carefully thought out ahead of time; lunch has to be packed prior to a full day of work; and dinner should incorporate smaller, more nutritional portions.

I know this all too well. I track my calories daily and monitor those burned from exercise on a weekly basis. But when my vacation to Mexico was approaching, I wondered what it would do to my routine.

Luckily, I was headed to an all-inclusive resort that offered a variety of daily activities, from yoga to water polo. The options were suitable to everyone’s needs, and there was even a tour that my friend, and avid cyclist, Katie could enjoy.

Of course, not everything will be included in your hotel’s cost. For example, at our resort of choice, Excellence Playa Mujeres, motorized activities such as jet skiing were not included.

Wide Open Spaces (August '10 Issue)

As I plan to downsize my living arrangements, the Dixie Chicks’ "Wide Open Spaces,” comes to mind ... and it’s making me feel nostalgic for the spacious spot I’m about to leave behind. Currently enjoying the freedom of my two-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-story
condominium, my imminent move into a smaller space -- like the size of a bedroom -- truthfully worries me! Can I cut back on the amount of space I’ve grown accustomed to, yet remain comfortable? What if I only have one closet versus three? And overall, how do I go from living in a ‘wide open space’ to a small, narrow one? I thought those days of cramped living arrangements had come and gone; however, in an effort to relocate closer to family, I’ll soon be trading in my multiple-level condo for a bedroom at my aunt’s house: a deja vu back to the days of living at home with my mother, when existing in a bedroom was all I had.

Who's Your Master? (June 2010 Issue)

I am not afraid of trying new things: New foods, new activities, and the occasional attempt at new outfit colors are some examples. So when I got an email about Scott Shields' Martial Arts Academy, my interest in a new workout option was peaked. My mind began wandering...Bruce Lee, Kung Fu, Kill Bill...could I be a part of all of this?

A community staple for 18 years now, Scott Shields' Martial Arts Academy is a cutting edge facility that offers a variety of martial arts class in beginner to advanced levels. So when Ashley Nee invited me to a Muay Thai class, I jumped at the opportunity!

A national sport of Thailand, Muay Thai began as a military art form, later developed into a sport, and is today widely known as a kickboxing art. Sometimes referred to as “The Science of 8 Limbs,” Muay Thai uniquely utilizes your arms, legs, elbows and knees, and is a great total-body workout. When I arrived for my class, I was met by a majority male crowd, in a dance-studioesque type space, with Master Scott Shields facing the room with his back to the mirrored front wall. I sat on the floor next to Ashley and observed with excitement & slight anxiety. Master Shields would explain the exercise, demonstrate it, then send us into pairs to practice it for two to three minutes at a time.

Riding in Style (May 2010 Issue)

When milestones are met, many people find different ways to celebrate their arrival. Romantic, sunny vacations; parties under the Las Vegas lights; Caribbean cruises complete with snorkeling getaways...these are all examples of how we pay tribute and give ourselves that theoretical "pat on the back." For many of my friends and myself, 2010 marks a milestone: we’re reaching pivotal ages. Some of my friends are reaching the quarter-century mark, but most of us are turning 30. And while I'm a proponent of the obligatory birthday celebration, some of my other girlfriends have different ways to celebrate.

Katie and I have been friends since college. And as all of us girls approach the big 3-0, she has been the only one who has welcomed the triple-decade mark with open arms. Rather than feeling as though it's the end of her youth --or the end of anything for that matter-- Katie welcomes 30 as a new beginning. And to celebrate and kick 30 in the butt, Katie is going to be strapping her butt into a Trek Madone 5.0 and will be cycling around the country in honor of her milestone.

Moving Forward in 2010! (March 2010 Issue)

Hear ye, hear ye! Another season and a new year are upon us! It is the first year of a brand new decade and with every new year brings an influx of gym memberships. The first few months of any new year is a time when one finds an influx of cars in the gym parking lot & not a vacant treadmill in sight.

Also with every new year comes the inevitable New Year’s Resolutions, where we solemnly swear to resolve our past wrongdoings and better ourselves. We resolve to lose weight, be more nutritious with our diets and the list goes on and on. Most of the time, these Resolutions have an expiration date. For example, “I want to be in great physical shape by the time bikini season gets here!”

Some of my New Year’s Resolutions have a "To-Do By" date while others endure for the entire year. Therefore, this year, I am going to rename them “My Yearly Resolutions,” which are as follows:
