What in the WAKA? (July 2009 Issue)

Since the beginning of spring, I have noticed a trend emerge whether from out of Miami or right here in Charlotte, and it is not a new form of Yoga. Some outright laugh or make comments in jest, but the World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA) is not a joking matter. Well Ok, maybe it is not to be taken too seriously, but this association does exist…seriously!

I had the pleasure of playing with the “Happy Hour Hooligans” kickball team this spring under the NC Velocity Division and I enjoyed every minute of it! Remember your elementary school days? When the only things that mattered were the monkey bars, red light-green light, hopscotch, Dodgeball and of course, kickball! Now imagine playing the game in this day & time, with other twentysomethings, then venturing out to a weekly post-game gathering at the Epicentre for drink specials… How much fun would that be?!

Tons, actually. I truly looked forward to every Sunday’s game simply for the sheer enjoyment of it all. I mean, it’s KICKBALL! Who didn’t enjoy playing kickball growing up? If you didn’t grow up in this country or are simply just unaware of this super important sport, imagine Baseball but instead of a small hard ball, it is played with a 10-16 inch inflatable red rubber ball that is kicked -instead of batted- when pitched at you. There are 3 bases and a home base, just like in Baseball, and there are 3 outs as well. Some of the strikes, outs and fouls can vary by a digit but mostly both games encompass the same rules. The $62 registration fee includes all gaming materials and a team T-shirt. After every game, kickballers can enjoy discounted pints at Blackfinn, exclusively for WAKA Kickball teams.

WAKA Kickball is being played all over the country from Portland to Philadelphia and from West Virginia to California, but it isn’t called the “World Adult Kickball Association” if it was only on this continent! Great Britain can also enjoy the game in London, England as well.

Fitness can rear its head in many ways and now with the warm climate, I challenge everyone to get out and play a sport! Definitely join a softball league or flag football team, because not only are you being healthy and fit, you are building relationships with people outside of your everyday circle. Just go out and get active! Till Next time…
